Sultan Gate derives its name from Sultan Hussein Mua’zzam Shah of Johor, who established his first palace, Istana Kampong Gelam, here in 1819. During the early 20th century, Sultan Gate thrived as a hub for blacksmiths and foundries, a testament to its industrious past. The area’s historical significance is now preserved at the Malay Heritage Centre, housed within the former Istana Kampong Gelam.
